KATHIE ARMSTRONG's - resume reads like every wannabe designer's dream: a degree from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in L.A., a stint consulting for Holt Renfrew Private Brand, product development with Lululemon, and working with Paul Hardy. Now the Calgary designer has gone solo with PAPERBAG. Her first collection includes this season's full skirts, a flirty one-shouldered capri jumpsuit ($150), and bold graphic T-shirts that are both chic and street.

RIDE THIS CLUTCH - Irene Rasetti spent seven years studying and working in the studios of Gianfranco Ferre and Versace in Italy, so our interest was piqued when she launched DOVEHUNTER a line of modern clutches. Using vintage fabrics in fall's on-trend shades and prints (grey and plaid), each purse ($68) comes with a matching coin pouch. At Shisomiso (100 Seventh Ave. SW, Suite 105, Calgary, 403-266-4211, shisomiso.com)

HORSE PLAY - Fashion has a long standing affair with wildlife-inspired designs and animal prints. The Amber Leigh label is no exception. Designer Amber Hebert began by embroidering tigers on sweaters and tops, but for spring she's turned her focus to ponies. The collection includes long, slim jersy dresses and tops in pony-patterned fabric, of course.
